Organizers of the 16th Annual Taste of Morgan Hill made a smart move by only allowing local restaurants to take part in the weekend-long food extravaganza that recently dominated downtown.

Considering the annual event is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, giving local eateries an exclusive chance to display their culinary talents is only appropriate. And, by the looks on the many faces of people snacking throughout the event – most festival-goers didn’t seem to miss the out-of-town restaurants.

Though the idea of a “taste” festival is generically applied to cities throughout the country, serving local cuisine is what makes each replicated event completely unique. Likewise, keeping the event local, at least when it comes to the food, serves a dual purpose for the Chamber of Commerce. Exposing residents to the wonderful restaurants scattered throughout our fine city will hopefully attract some of the many people who visited the Mushroom City last weekend to seek us out again.

Where else can people find salmon tacos to match Rosy’s at the beach, tri-tip at the Trail Dust or any of the other wonderful foods on display Saturday and Sunday?

Organizers of the event rightly remembered the Taste gives Morgan Hill an excellent opportunity to show our neighboring communities the charm of local restaurants, businesses, wineries and residents. Allowing other restaurants at the event will only dilute the marketing power of the Taste.

Of course, the Taste of Morgan Hill is about much more than just food, it’s about our community coming together to celebrate another local tradition. Whether it was old friends meeting each other at the Quilt Show, new friends looking at the hottest cars on Monterey Road or families enjoying a bite to eat, this year’s event truly provided a taste of what Morgan Hill has to offer.

And, we’re not just talking about the food. The event displayed the true spirit of Morgan Hill as close-knit community people are proud to call home.
