Despite a 19-0 loss to St. Lawrence Academy of Felton in its final match of the season, the Live Oak rugby club celebrated a fine effort that saw the Acorns compile a 5-5-1 overall record in their maiden season.
Coach Bart Nielsen said he couldn’t have been happier with the team’s accomp-lishments during the season and that he’s looking forward to making more progress next year, when it is expected to return 13 players.
“I’m very optimistic,” Nielsen said. “From when we started to when we finished, there was a huge amount of improvement. The guys really came through for us.”
Picking up players as it went, the Acorns finished with a 24-player roster, led by Skyhawk Conference all-star candidates Miguel Ayala, Zach Freitas and Dustin Muhn.
Live Oak will complete its year with a May 1 team banquet, which includes a trip to the Collegiate Division I rugby champion-ships at Stanford University.
