SAN JOSE — Steven Nonnenmacher and Katie Fernandez triumphed in a decisive mixed doubles match, and the Live Oak badminton team won another nail-biter, 8-7, Friday against San Jose.

Against Carolina Lopez and Victor Martinez, Nonnenmacher and Fernandez dropped the first set, but ran away in the second and third to win 7-15, 15-1, 15-10.

The visiting Acorns improved to 6-4 in West Valley Division play.

Live Oak’s No. 1 boys single Johann Christ Abordo ran his undefeated win streak to 10, beating Nooji Noojibal impressively, 15-2, 15-1.

Sara Ann Garber had a tougher time in the top girls match, but battled to a three-set victory, 15-6, 12-15, 15-5, over Thuy Tran of San Jose (3-7). The Acorns’ Emily Mandel defeated Thuy Nguyen in the No. 2 girls match, 15-6, 15-5.

“Emily is growing stronger and stronger with each match and currently is on track to become the No. 1 girls for next season,” Live Oak coach Bharat Poria said in a statement.

The Acorns’ top boys pair of Addien Wray and Peter Mains won their match handily, 15-9, 15-8.
