San Jose – The Live Oak girls tennis team battled hard, but couldn’t overcome Leland in a 7-0 loss to the Chargers on the road Tuesday.

With a mix of youth and experience, the Acorns are looking to grow as a program during their first year in the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

“It seems like being in that league is going to be real tough,” coach Jennifer Yoder said. “We’re in the “A” division. They’re the best players out there.”

Live Oak is looking for senior singles players Shalia Patel and Rachelle Abbey to lead the way for the team.

“They’re the captains of the team. I’m just hoping they’ll set the example and just dedicate themselves as being consistent and playing hard,” Yoder said.

Junior Karissa Watanabe and sophomore Kalea Cleeton round out the singles players for Live Oak.

A pair of sisters, Arianna and Charissa Hosseini, are teamed up to play doubles, something that Yoder had initial concerns about but says is working out well.

“They both complement each other,” Yoder said of the senior Arianna and sophomore Charissa. “It’s a good blend, a good combination. They won their first match together.”

Yoder calls her No. 2 doubles team, senior Matice McClellen and freshman Marie Lewis, her “fire and ice” team. Freshmen Bernice LeBlanc and Mika Matsumoto will pair up at No. 3 doubles and provide some youth to build a solid foundation for the future.

“I just don’t want them to get intimidated and not come out next year,” Yoder said of the younger players. “I’m looking forward to them coming out the next couple of years.”

Field Hockey

Morgan Hill – The Live Oak field hockey team had little trouble disposing of San Jose at home Tuesday, earning a 7-0 win.

Junior defender Tanya Ferry led the way with two goals. Junior forward Lexy Nuno had two hits and two assists, junior defender Sarah Locarnini had two assists, junior forward Kami Tersini had a goal and an assist, senior forward Rebecca Webb scored a goal and sophomore defender Julia Hartl had one assist.

The Acorns returned to action Thursday at Los Gatos, with the results not being available at press time.
