upset Saturday to defeat the Alvarez Eagles 31-21.
Salinas – The Live Oak football team pulled off a fourth quarter upset Saturday to defeat the Alvarez Eagles 31-21.
With the ball going back and forth for much of the first quarter, Live Oak was first on the scoreboard as senior running back Steven Rodriguez completed Live Oak’s drive with six-yard run for six points with 1:59 left in the quarter. The kick was failed.
Alvarez answered back and took the lead late in the second quarter when senior fullback Sean Cooper scored on a three-yard run, and senior Felix Reyes completed the extra point.
The Eagles opened the the second half with an early touchdown from senior running back Esau Merino, who went 51 yards through the Acorn’s defense for the score.
Live Oak answered back on a scoring drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by senior Matt Cummins.
Live Oak complete the two point conversion to tie the score at 14 a piece.
The Eagles answered back with one second left in the third quarter when Merino scored on a two-yard run to break the tie and lead the Acorns 21-14 going into the fourth.
Facing a deficit, the Acorns turned to their running game for some yardage.
Junior Billy Van Aiken scored on a two-yard run with 5:11 left on the clock, but Live Oak failed on the two point conversion, and Alvarez remained with the advantage 21-20.
The Live Oak defense held off the Eagles offense, regained possession and scored again with 2:24 left in the game to capture the lead for the first time in the quarter.
Live Oak successfully completed the two-point conversion this time to extend their lead by seven points at 28-21.
Live Oak’s Mott knocked in a 25-yard field goal with 00:47 left in the game to secure the win for the Acorns.
