Story on marijuana highlights dangers

Dear Editor,

Great article on marijuana. I read it in a local Hollister newspaper. I had never caught an article that talks about the ” … vacation from development.” THAT is the essence of marijuana problems I think, driving impairment seems benign, etc. but, you can’t ignore that you “check out” of a sequence of development that cannot be “re-entered.” Saw much of that in myself and quit 15 years ago, but thought you might be interested in this relationship to another phobia: Shyness.

Phil Zimbardo at Stanford University did the seminal research on the subject and estimates that 42 to 48 percent of people consider themselves shy (he takes that number seriously as those people live an extremely different life than the not-shy). Marijuana, to many it seems, produces “mild paranoia,” which could be compared to effects of shyness to some degree.

I think they are very related and people seem to be really interested in the shyness numbers, especially since, at 40-plus percent, it affects everyone to some degree (themselves, spouse, kids, etc.). Anyway, great article.
