Where do you begin? I can tell this, don
’t take advise from to your friends or spouses. My advice is to
take a class or private instruction from a certified PGA or LPGA
professional. Golf can be a frustrating game if you’re not coached
with proper fundamentals.

Yes, there are some college and community classes offered throughout the area, but be careful who’s teaching the course. The PGA and LPGA professionals go through extensive training and testing for certification in teaching. The PGA launched a national campaign, Play Golf America, introducing the game to new golfers. For information go to www.playgolfamerica.com, click under golf instruction, this will list all local facilities offering beginning programs.
Finding the right instructor is important. You can find a lot of information out on the Internet about the instructors in the area. Most facilities have information posted or flyers on the instructors. Also, while asking around, if you hear the same name a number of times, that is a good indication their reliable. The title, “So you want to be a golfer,” is the name of a book a good friend of mine, former San Jose State coach Jerry Vroom, wrote for the beginning golfer, I highly recommend it. Coyote Creek Golf Club is presently offering beginning golf schools throughout the summer on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. For information call 408-463-1400.
Don Leone is the Director of Golf Instruction at Coyote Creek Golf Course. For information about classes, email dl****@*********ke.com or call 463-8024.
