Sobrato looks forward to next season as young team grows;
hosting youth basketball camp
Morgan Hill – Despite not winning a Tri-County Athletic League game in their inaugural varsity season, the Sobrato Bulldogs girls basketball team’s non-league record earned them an invite to participate in the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs.
On Wednesday the No. 18 seeded Bulldogs faced off against the No. 15 seeded Santa Catalina Cougars in Santa Catalina and were defeated 53-33.
“The girls played great and they played extremely hard until the last seconds of the game,” said Sobrato coach Rodney Tabares. “Roxanne and Sarina really kept us in the game with their energy and strong shooting performances.”
Freshman guard Sarina Santiago led the Bulldogs with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and sophomore guard Roxanne Dominguez added 10 points in the loss. Freshman forward Michelle Bradley contributed six points for Sobrato.
Trailing 24-13 at the half, the Bulldogs rallied in the third quarter to pull within eight points of the Cougars, but a 19 point fourth quarter by Santa Catalina shut the door on Sobrato.
“At the end of the third quarter we had cut their lead to eight points and they just pulled away in the fourth quarter,” said Tabares.
The young, inexperienced Bulldogs team found themselves to be the underdogs all season in the TCAL, but fought hard for the entire 32 minutes of each game they played. The team always came out to play and steadily improved throughout the season.
Following Sobrato’s final TCAL loss to the TCAL’s undefeated Gilroy Mustangs two weeks ago, Tabares said that it was good to see the Gilroy squad on their senior night because that group of girls went 3-7 in the TCAL their sophomore year and it was an inspiration, giving the Bulldogs something to look forward to as they gain skill and experience.
Even though their season is over, Sobrato’s team will be returning to the court on April 19, 20 and 21 to host the “Bulldog Basketball Camp” for children ages 4-13.
The camp will cost $75 per camper and $140 for two campers. According to Tabares, Sobrato is looking to make this camp an annual event if they can get enough participants to come out.
