Morgan Hill’s Junior Pee Raiders won their first home game
Saturday, beating Cambrian Valley 16-8
MORGAN HILL — The Morgan Hill Junior Pee Wee Raiders won their home opener Saturday, beating the Cambrian Valley Longhorns 16-8 at the Outdoor Sports Center.
Jason Gomez scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 42-yard pass and catch in the fourth quarter, and Devon Buenrostro added his second 2-point conversion kick of the game.
The first quarter saw a mixed bag of plays, with both teams scrambling to get on the board first. The Raiders did so with Miles Kendrick’s 1-yard sneak behind Eric Payne with a little more than three minutes remaining.
The Longhorns pulled even during an action-packed second quarter, but the Raiders’ defense still shined. Trevor Costello blocked a Longhorns pass, and Morgan Hill linemen Ruben Piedra, Jared Luner, Riley Owen, Sean Araiza and Alec Horne teamed up to corral the Cambrian running backs.
The Raiders’ front five of Alex Panos, Matthew Douglas, Cole Sanders, Trent Laubach and Costello opened up a variety of running plays to keep the Longhorns guessing in the third quarter. Morgan Hill running backs Paul Lomanto, Trent Costello and Justin Sanders displayed their agility and speed with each carry.
Morgan Hill’s defense worked a shutout in the second half to preserve the win.
