And the award for the 2005 Northern California Tournament of the Year goes to… the Gilroy Garlic National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP).

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) once again chose the Gilroy Garlic tournament, which drew 150 competitors last July, as the best tennis tournament NorCal has to offer.

“(It was chosen) because it’s very hospitable, a nice tournament and is run well,” said Eileen Obata, president of the Gilroy Tennis Club, which oversees the tournament.

The Gilroy Garlic NTRP was chosen out of about 100 other tournaments, Obata estimated. Anyone who participates in a tournament gets to vote.

The event, which Obata said has received the tournament of the year title six times, will be held once again this summer, on July 9, 10 and 11.

The event was first held in 1985 and had 45 participants that year. This year, Obata expects the tournament to draw 300 entrants.

Gilroy Tennis Club members Susan Dodd and Barbara Hauer are this year’s tournament directors.

The Gilroy Tennis Club includes members from Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill.

The Gilroy Tennis Club is located at 16666 Walter Breton Dr. Call 779-7123 for information.
