Golf TV commentator Peter Jacobsen will be this year’s Frys.com Open honoree. Organizers of the golf tournament made the announcement Monday at the sponsorship appreciation day. Jacobsen is a former player who has won seven PGA events and two Champions Tour events. He now is a commentator for NBC and the Golf Channel.
Last year’s honoree Ken Venturi died May 17 at the age of 82. Venturi was likewise a golf commentator and a former player. He had 14 PGA Tour victories, including winning the 1964 US Open. Venturi died shortly after being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. His son accepted the honor on his behalf.
The sponsorship day was a chance for the sponsors of the Frys.com Open to compete against each other in foursomes. Each team had a pro attached to their score card that they could use toward a best finish for each hole along with free strokes for each hole.
The winning team of Michael Cichon, Joe Johnson, Jered Wagner and Galen Chin shot a net score of 53. In a side competition, David Middler won a closest to the pin putting challenge to earn $5,000 for a charity of his choice.
PGA Tour player Spencer Levin, a Northern California native, was on hand to answer a few golf questions as well as give a golf swing demonstration.
This year’s Frys.com Open is scheduled for Oct. 7-13.
