Gilroy – Genaro Redmond didn’t get the desired result but the Sobrato heavyweight did get another top-five tournament finish.

Redmond reached the 30-win mark and finished fourth over the weekend at the Mid-Cals at Gilroy High School.

That matched the finish of Moses Guillardo, who also took fourth at 128.

Like Redmond, he won his first three bouts to advance to the semifinals before losing.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished 22nd in what coach Phil Luna said was the second toughest tournament they have competed in this year. Luna felt Sobrato would have garnered a top-15 finish if Mike Duran, the No. 1-ranked 112-pounder, had wrestled. Because Duran has wrestled 32 matches already, Luna opted not to use him in the tournament.

Gilroy successfully defended its team title in the Mid-Cals by compiling 225.50 points and crowing two champions. Elk Grove, which had three individual champions, was second with 196.50 points. San Benito was second among Central Coast Section schools, finishing sixth overall with 113 points, including two individual runners-up.

Redmond started the tournament by pinning Michael Chun of Independence in 30 seconds. He followed with a fall over Ray Baldonado of Serra in 3:58. A 3-1 decision over Jacob Stout of Anderson put Redmond in the semifinals where he was beaten 4-2 by Jacob Maxson of Redwood. Redmond had a 2-0 lead in the bout.

Redmond advanced to the consolation final by pinning Tyler Bernard of Center in 4:22. He then lost 8-2 to Brandon Hamilton of Elk Grove.

“He was up 1-0 and then got a stalling call,” Luna said. “He thought he had to do something and tried to throw the kid.”

Instead, Redmond was taken down and now he was wrestling from behind and with a sense of urgency.

Redmond is 30-7 on the season with two duel-meet matches remaining. The senior has one first, two seconds, a fourth and a fifth in five tournaments.

Guillardo’s result was heartbreaking since he defeated Emmanuel Lanza of Watsonville 12-7 in the quarterfinals after earlier pinning Paul Newswanger of Homestead in 3:32 and winning by major decision over Brandon Clower of Diamonte, 12-1. After losing a hard-fought 3-0 decision to eventual champion Caleb Vallotton of Foothill (Palo Cedro), Guillardo decisioned Michael Rodriguez of Independence 8-5 to earn another shot at Lanza for third place.

A stalling point that went against Guillardo was the difference in a 3-2 loss.

“We as coaches probably should have put him on his feet,” Luna said of the decision for Guillardo to choose the bottom position. “He’s a little better on his feet than the other kid. We figured he’d get the one point (for an escape) and it didn’t work out that way. I feel he wrestled really well considering it was the first tournament he was really able to go.”

Luna likes where the wrestling team is at as it hits the homestretch of the season.

“The team is peaking now,” Luna said. “We had the toughest tournament schedule we ever had. I think we’ll be ready for the postseason.”
