It came down to two key points. Two key points that stood
between the defending champion Live Oak High boys volleyball team
and victory or defeat in its Tri-County Athletic League opener
against visiting Seaside Wednesday. Luckily for the Acorns, both
those points went their way in the fifth, and deciding, game of a
hard-fought 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 16-25, 16-14 victory over the
spunky Spartans. Tied at 14-all in the final game, LO got two
favorable calls, one on a serve that was called out and one on a
double hit by the Spartans to end the match. Both calls were loudly
protested by the Seaside coach.

Luckily for the Acorns, both those points went their way in the fifth, and deciding, game of a hard-fought 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 16-25, 16-14 victory over the spunky Spartans.

Tied at 14-all in the final game, LO got two favorable calls, one on a serve that was called out and one on a double hit by the Spartans to end the match. Both calls were loudly protested by the Seaside coach.

But first-year LO coach Keith Tungate said he’d take the win in his first league match no matter how it came, especially considering how many new Acorns are on the roster this season.

“We’ll take it,” Tungate said. “We have a lot of new guys and the progression I’ve seen has been phenomenal.”

LO (1-1 overall, 1-0 in league) was led by its defense and middle blocker Joel Siebert.

“His blocking was amazing,” Tungate said. “I have to hand the game to the defense.”

The Acorns play in the Leland Tournament today.

LO track

In its TCAL dual meet opener at Hollister-San Benito on Thursday, the Live Oak High boys and girls track and field team turned in a few promising performances despite losing both team competitions to the impressive Haybalers.

Winners for the Acorns included Brandon Powell in the 110 hurdles (15.6), Dustin Muhn in the 110 (11.32), Jesus Atanacio in the 880 (2:10.17), Billy Wong in the two-mile, Azucena Atanacio in the discus (100-0), Cobbie Jones in the 880 (2:30) and Lisa Herrera in the two-mile (12:57).

LO competes in the Archbishop Mitty Invitational today.

At last weekend’s Raymond Relays, the Acorn boys and girls teams took several firsts in the unique event hosted by Live Oak.

The LO boys won the 4X3,200 relay, the distance medley relay, and the shot put relay, and the LO girls won the high jump relay, the shot put relay, the discus relay and the pole vault relay.

LO also won the co-ed 4X400 shuttle hurdle relay event.

LO softball

After winning its first six games of the season, the Live Oak High softball team finally suffered its first loss.

But it took a gargantuan effort to do it.

On Thursday, host Leland rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and final, inning to pull off the 5-4 victory.

LO (6-1 overall) beat host Homestead 5-1 on Tuesday.

Weather permitting, the Acorns are scheduled to play Carlmont at 9am in the Gold Bracket of its own Circle of Champions Tournament at Twin Creeks today.
