MORGAN HILL — Senior Day may or may not be the last game of the season for Live Oak field hockey.
Friday’s scoreless draw with Monta Vista Christian moved the Lady Acorns to 6-3-3 in Santa Teresa Division play, mere percentage points behind Homestead for the league’s third and final playoff spot. Live Oak will travel to first-place Leigh on Wednesday before wrapping up the regular season at home Thursday against Homestead.
Both games are scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
“It’s crazy right now,” Acorns coach Gina Sanders said before Friday’s game at Live Oak High. “It could come down to our last game Thursday.”
The Acorns had several scoring opportunities against Monta Vista Christian (4-6-2); none better than in the 25th minute when Jacey Turay slotted a give-and-go feed to Megan Rauschnot, who pushed the ball deep into Monta Vista Christian’s side of the field. Rauschnot crossed to Guerrero, and Guerrero one-timed a 7-yard shot that goalkeeper Mariel Little had to do the splits to stop.
Live Oak had another chance off of a corner in the final minute. Following a timeout called by Sanders, the Acorns crashed every player toward Monta Vista Christian’s net but could not get off a decent shot.
SHS 2, University 1
Katie Merten and Brianna Sugimoto scored second-half goals Friday to push Sobrato past University 2-1 at the Outdoor Sports Center.
The Lady Bulldogs (4-6 West Valley Division) trailed until the 34th minute, when Merten drove in a rebound shot from less than 10 yards out after her first attempt hit the right goal post.
Sugimoto scored the game-winning goal on a rebound opportunity as well in the 55th minute. The senior’s first shot was blocked by the goalie’s leg pad, but her second try slipped through.
Sobrato played catch-up for most of the game despite building a 15-3 edge in shots. The Bulldogs came close to scoring in the sixth minute on 2-on-1 advantages created by Sugimoto and Andrea Salem.
University netted the first goal in the 19th minute.
