Defending CCS Champions, Live Oak Acorns, ousted in
quarterfinals by Mitty Monarchs, 9-1
The competitors that took to the Gilroy High track Thursday afternoon were smaller than the usual clientele that occupies it. But the competition was just as fierce.
In the finale for local middle school track and field athletes, nineteen teams competed in the South Valley Section Track and Field meet – including Britton and Martin Murphy middle schools.
When the results for the boys and girls events in all six divisions were tallied up, San Jose’s Ocala Middle School was the overall winner.
Britton took ninth overall behind a strong finish from the eighth grade girls who recorded three first place finishes in the 65 meter hurdles, four by 400 relay and the triple jump.
The Bobcats also had three additional top three finishes.
Britton eighth grader Stephanie Armstrong led the team with two first place finishes in the 65 meter hurdles, with a time of 10:31, and the triple jump, with a distance of 30 feet, three-and-a-half inches. She also took second in the high jump clearing four feet, six inches.
Martin Murphy finished 13th overall, including winning the seventh grade girls division. The Mustangs recorded three first place honors in the 4 by 100 relay, the long jump and the triple jump.
Murphy competitors also took second in the high jump and third in the 800 meter run.
The Mustangs recorded one additional first place finish in the A Boys 1600 meter run. They placed second in the 65 meter hurdles in the A Boys and the four by 400 relay in the C Boys.
Brownell Academy was the highest-placing Gilroy team, finishing in third overall.
The Bruins had four first-place finishers: Seventh-grader Chelsea Hill (shot put), eighth-grader Kourtney Howard (high jump), Julius Travis (C Boys division 65-meter hurdles) and Elizabeth Wallace (C Girls division discus).
