Never Too Old to Learn Art
GAVILAN COLLEGE’S older students presented an art exhibit at Hacienda Valley Mobile Estates, 275 Burnett Ave., in Morgan Hill Friday evening. The students, ages 55 and up, are members of the college’s “Living through Learning” program. The students have been participating in the free arts and crafts at Hacienda Valley Mobile Estates in Morgan Hill since August of this year.
The show is an example of Gavilan College’s efforts to reach out to older adult students in the community who may otherwise not be able to avail themselves of such opportunities.
Live Oak High Future Business Leaders Enjoy Experience at Conference
THE LIVE OAK HIGH SCHOOL’S Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America attended the Leadership Development Institute in Sacramento at the end of October. Leadership Development Institute (LDI) is a state wide conference for members of FBLA to gain entrepreneurial and business skills.
Two of the event’s speakers were Live Oak High alumni, including the closing speaker, Frank Seo. He awed students with his varied career experience in eight countries and four languages and inspired members to reach for a unique lifestyle, even if they do not have a solidified plan for the future yet. Seo also revealed the pleasant surprise that he will be funding two scholarships named after our very own Kiki and Yosh Nakauchi. The scholarship will be available to California FBLA students who make a presentation about solid plans to travel around the world and how they plan to get there.
Students had the pleasure of attending informational student-run workshops as well as listening to thrilling speakers. Officers of FBLA presented over 50 workshops in a myriad of areas, from Choosing the Right College to Leadership Styles to Job Interview. Each workshop presented valuable and applicable skills for eager FBLA students to ameliorate their abilities as well as opportunities in the future.
Along with so many educational experiences, LDI North was full of fun activities like a Haunted House and a dance to benefit the March of Dimes organization. The conference was a whirl of entertainment and learning for all the members who attended, and was just one of the many exciting conferences FBLA members attend throughout the school year.
