Two dreams in a row was just too much to hope for, as it turns out. Looking for his second straight appearance in this week’s AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, local favorite John Ellis came up short in a bid to qualify for the prestigious event.
The Live Oak High and Gavilan College product shot a 5-over 77 during qualifying play at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister on Monday.
“It’s very frustrating,” Ellis said. “I got off to a pretty good start, then I made a few bad swings. In these qualifiers, it’s tough. I got aggressive on a couple of holes and it didn’t work out. I just didn’t play well.”
Ellis, who had qualified for the AT&T in his first pro event last year, was well off the pace set by qualifiers Brett Boner (65) and Scott Piercy (70). Piercy won a playoff to pick up the second spot at San Juan Oaks.
A second qualifying tournament was held at Silver Creek Golf Club in San Jose, and J.R. Ruda and Peter Tomasulo qualified there with 67s.
