Nine schools participate in District Basketball Tourney at
Burnett
Morgan Hill – Last Thursday, Burnett Elementary School hosted the Boys and Girls District Elementary Basketball tournament, which promotes sportsmanship and developing basic skills.

Nine schools from around the district participated in the event, including Burnett, Barrett, Charter, El Toro, Paradise Valley, Jackson, Las Paseos, San Martin/Gwinn and Nordstrom. PA Walsh pulled out of the tournament.

According to Carrie Richards, a sixth grade teacher at Burnett, the point of the tournament was to help promote the schools and good sportsmanship.

“There was wonderful sportsmanship exhibited during the tournament and we had a great group of kids,” said Richards.

Each team (boys and girls separate) played three games, lasting 25 minutes and were refereed by eighth grade volunteers.

“We got the eighth graders out of school and they volunteered their time and did a great job,” added Richards.

El Toro came out on top as the overall winner for the boys and Charter emerged as the overall girls champion.

According to Richards the tournament was a great success and first and foremost sportsmanship was the key.

“Sportsmanship was definitely No. 1, followed by having fun and then about winning,” said Richards. “Some of these kids had never even held a basketball before and it helped them work on beginning skills.”
