Dear Editor,
I had a very smart realtor in San Luis Obispo. She told me to buy a home in a city that has a downtown.
She was right on the money. Since we purchased our home in August of 1999, we have done our best to support downtown and local businesses.
I am heartbroken to see the loss of some great downtown stores.
Thinker Toys, in particular, has been a favorite of my family.
If I wanted a toy with educational value rather than commercial hype, off I would go to Thinker toys.
I usually purchase art supplies for the many birthday parties my children attend. Ken gift wrapped for free.
So, I imagine I may have to go on-line. This is not good.
A sense of community is built by relationships. Local store owners provide that so much better than a bevy of clerks in a super chain.
Also, their depth of knowledge and professionalism is so different than the latest new hire at Cochrane Plaza.
I enjoy the connections I have with the downtown merchants and feel good knowing my money is staying in the community (particularly the funds that go to support our schools).
Our city’s uniqueness depends on a thriving downtown.
Please have the courage to support local businesses by monetary incentives, or, at least, by not paying the big guys to come here.
Please provide by tax incentives, waving of city fees and other incentives to get downtown built up to a flourishing gathering place for the citizens of Morgan Hill!
