This weekend’s third annual Morgan Hill/Gilroy Cup soccer tournament will feature 86 of the finest Division I teams from Northern and Southern California competing at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex this weekend. Hosted by Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League, the tourney event will run Saturday and Sunday, and include Under-11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 girls’ teams and U11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 19 boys’ teams. Games start at 8 a.m. both days.

gilroy junior picked for regional team

Gilroy High center midfielder Alfonso Motagalvan was recently selected to the Western Regional Olympic Developmental soccer team, after demonstrating his skills during a week of games against other elite state teams in Oregon. The 17-year-old, who made the California-North regiuonal team for the first time in his career this summer, was one of 25 players picked for the Western Regional squad out of a pool of talented players from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Cal-North, Cal-South, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. He became the first player ever out of Gilroy High School to receive the honor. The Western Regional Olympic Developmental team will compete in three elite tournament in Chula Vista, Florida and abroad in either Germany or South America. Motagalvan has already been noticed by several college coaches within the United States and was at a UC-Berkley mini-camp two days before heading to Oregon for the regional tournament.

gavilan summer hoops camp

Kids grades 3-8 are invited to attend the Gavilan College Men’s Basketball Summer Camp Monday through Friday next week at Gavilan, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy. Hosted by the Gavilan Rams players and coaching staff, including Head Coach Chris Shoemaker, the camp is designed to provide quality basketball instruction, including basic skills in a fun atmosphere. Instruction will focus on offensive and defensive fundamentals, shooting, rebounding, ball handling, passing, dribbling, stretching and conditioning. Each camper will have an opportunity to use their skills in game competition. Sessions for grades 3-5 will be held 9 a.m. to noon, with sessions for grades 6-8 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fee is $65. Morgan Hill cyclist Daniel Holloway’s competed in three events at the Junior Track World Championships in Los Angeles last week. Racing for Lombardi Sports’ Juniors Cycling Team, the 17-year-old was one of nine junior men selected by USA Cycling for the world championships. In the 3-km Individual Pursuit on July 28, Daniel’s time of 3:41.003 was 22nd fastest in qualifying, but only the top eight riders qualify for the finals. In the 4-km Team Pursuit on July 30-31, the US team was the eighth, and final, qualifier with a 4:32.136, but faced top-seed Australia in Round 1 of the finals and were eliminated. In the 30-km Madison on Aug. 1, the U.S. team of Daniel and Michael Chauner from Pennsylvania had to withdraw after Chauner crashed.

mt. madonna challenge

A major fundraising event of the South Valley Symphony, the Mount Madonna Challenge, takes place Sunday, Aug. 29. This year’s event will feature a 6K SalamanderWalk and Race commencing at 8:30 a.m., registration at 7:30 a.m., followed by the featured 12K Mt. Madonna Challenge Race beginning at 9 a.m. The race is sponsored by the Gavilan Joggers and Striders and the South Valley Symphony.

All entries are to report to the Sprig Lake picnic area site at the base (Gilroy side) of Mt. Madonna County Park. Pre-registration fees are $20 with shirt and $13 without. Registrations received after Aug. 24 will be priced at $25 with shirt and $18 without. Completed registration forms should be made payable to the South Valley Symphony, Mt. Madonna Challenge, and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347. T-shirts will be guaranteed for all pre-registered entrants. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in age group in both races, while trophies will be awarded to the first place man and woman in the 12K race only. Age divisions for both men and women have been established as A 10-18; B 19-29; C 30-34; D 35-39; E 40-44; F 45-49; G 50-54; H 55-59; I 60-69; and J 70 and over.

arm-strengthening program

Taylor Made’s Fall Arm-Strengthening Program, which focuses on throwing technique, throwing mechanics and training the arm to be healthy throughout the season and beyond, begins Sept. 13. Designed for players 13 and under, the program will last eight weeks through the first week of November. Held at Community Park in Morgan Hill, the class will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5-6 p.m. Classes will be taught by Rich Taylor, who is certified to teach the Alan Jaeger “Thrive on Throwing” program. The cost for the 24 sessions is $195 ($8 per session ) This will include the j-bands (surgical tubing). Payments are due by Aug. 15.
