Niner aces

The Gavilan Niners held their June Ace Day on June 26 at the Gavilan Golf Course in Gilroy. Ace for June was Donna Ashmore, Gilroy net 29. First in the first flight was Donna Ashmore, Gilroy, net 29, second was Peggy Woolf, Morgan Hill, net 30 and third was Anita Sciutto, Capitola, net 31.

First in the second flight was Joan Webenbauer, Morgan Hill, net 32, second was Bobbi Bentley, Morgan Hill, net 32, and third was Nina Kimoto, Watsonville, net 32. Four people tied for low putts with 16: Peggy Woolf , Opal Imprescia. Teri Swan and Irene Rodriguez.

The Gavilan Niners participated in short course at the Gavilan Golf Course on June 13. Peggy Woolf came in first in her flight, Nina Kimoto came in first in her flight,Irene Rodriguez came in first in her flight, Joan Webenbauer came in second in her flightand Barb Hagen and Teri Swan came in 3rd in their respective flights.

The Gavilan Niners play each Thursday morning at the Gavilan Golf Course in Gilroy.

Freedom 5000 race

The Morgan Hill Freedom 5000 5K walk and run will be held on July 4 beginning at PA Walsh Elementary School. The cost is $25 on race day and includes breakfast and chip timing. Registration is 6:15 – &:30 a.m. Details: call 779-6686 or email ch*****@wm**********.com or go to mhidi.com/5krun.htm.

Pop warner signups

Morgan Hill Pop Warner is still accepting applications. Equipment is issued July 26; Official start of season is Aug. 1; Jamboree game: Aug. 31; Regular season ends: week of Oct. 26; Post season begins: Nov. 1.

Practice is 10 hours per week in pre-season and six hours per week after Labor Day. Games are on Saturdays and Sundays

Fitness expo

The Max Muscle sports nutrition and training gear supply center, located at 8025 Kern Avenue in Gilroy, will be hosting a fitness expo July 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – featuring professional body builder Quincy Taylor and pro figure competitor Elaine Goodled.

Taylor – who competed in the Olympiads – was the 2001 Mr. USA, while Goodled – who appeared on the cover of Oxygen Magazine – placed in the top 5 at the 2002 Arnold Classic. The two will be posing for pictures and signing autographs.

There will also be hourly raffles and vendors with free samples in front of the store – which is off First Street in Gilroy.

Reek run

The Reek Runs is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, at Gavilan College. The 10K race starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K run/walk starts at 8:15. Medals are awarded to the top three places in each division. Pre-registration will be accepted through Saturday, July 5, and costs $20 with shirt and $12 without. Or register at Gavilan on race day, near the tennis courts, for $25 with shirt and $15 without. Fall soccer

Signups are now being taken for fall soccer for the Orchard Valley Soccer League. The cost before June 30 is $95 for the first and second child and $60 for the third child. After June 30, the cost is $120 if space is available. Download an application at www.ovysl.com. Youth hoops

The summer SCBA will add teams to its junior high boys division if four to six more people sign up. Any interested boy going into the 7th, 8th or 9th grade is eligible. Any girl who wants to play in a junior high/high school level basketball league on Saturdays this summer should also call Jim Green at 460-7402.

Sports camps

The popular all-sports camp for boys and girls ages 6-13 starts July 7. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Kids are introduced to all types of sports. There is still room. The cost is $135 or $115 for 2 or more. Additional science, arts and sports camps run throughout the summer. Details: Norm Dow at 847-2075.

Bicycle racing

The Earthbound Farm Classic bicycle race on July 4 has been added to the season schedule for the Hellyer Park Velodrome in South San Jose.

The Classic will feature the Fourth Annual Winning Wheels Ten Mile Record Attempt, sponsored by Winning Wheels Bicycle Shop in Pacific Grove. The existing Ten Mile Record for the Hellyer Park Velodrome is 19 minutes 59 seconds, set by Keish Doi in 1996.

In addition to the Ten Mile Record Attempt, the race program will feature a variety of racing, including sprints and the always-popular Miss-and-Out.

The Hellyer Park Velodrome is the only Olympic-size bicycle racing track in Northern California. Other races scheduled for the Hellyer Park Velodrome in 2003 include the Burbank Memorial Omnium on July 11, and the Northern California Junior Championships on June 29.

Junior golf camp

Learn the basic fundamentals from the certified PGA instructors. This junior golf camp runs from 10 a.m. to noon on July 21-25, Aug. 11-15.
