Chilipeppers make Final Four at SD Surf Cup

Led by the offensive heroics of Morgan Hill’s Colby Carson and Samantha Riolo, the Central Valley Chilipeppers U11 girls soccer team made the Final Four of the San Diego Surf Cup last weekend. After advancing to the prestigious tourney’s semifinals with a perfect 3-0 record in pool play, the Peppers ended up matched against their Northern California rival, the Danville Blast. The Peppers and Blast battled back and forth to a 0-0 tie in the first half. In the second half, the Blast broke through with eight minutes to go for a 1-0 lead. Despite battling furiously in a quest for the equalizer, the Peppers could not manage the tying goal and lost 1-0. But the San Jose-based club team earned plenty of respect from its Southern California hosts, as the Peppers showed off the tourney’s leading offense, according to Peppers backers.

In pool play, the Peppers opened against Pasadena’s FC Barcelona. MH’s Carson put the ball in the back of the net four times, with MH’s Riolo assisting on three of the goals and Zarette Munoz tallying the other assist as the Peppere cruised to a 4-0 win.

In their second game, the Peppers were matched up with Massachusetts’ South Coast Scorpions, who had not lost a game in two years. Carson and Riolo sarted off with a bang as Munoz chipped a ball to the top of the box that Riolo headed down to Carson’s feet. Carson blated it into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead. Chloe Varvel added a goal off a Munoz assist to make it 2-0 at the half. In the second half, the Scorpions defense stiffened and didn’t allow a goal until the last minute when Riolo put the ball to the far post where Gabi Squarcia punched it in to make the final 3-0 Peppers.

In their third and final pool game, the Peppers faced one of the top Southern California clubs in the Newport Beach Slammers. The Peppers were sluggish and sarted slow as the Slammers controlled the first 15 minutes of play. Chloe Ainley got the Peppers going stealing a ball on the right side and hitting a streaking Branna Ross, who put the ball right in front of the Slammers goalkeeper, who wasn’t quick enough to stop Carson from tallying her sixth goal of the tournament. But the Slammers evened it up before the half on a corner kick. The second half turned out to be all Peppers as Riolo turned in her sixth assist, feeding Breanna Ross, and Gabi Squarcia finished off the Slammers with a pair of goals off assists from her sister Brittany Squarcia and Celeste Kaashoek.

The Peppers ended up finshing pool play with 29 of 30 possible points, outscoring their opponents 11-1 in three games.
