As the year finally comes to an end, many high school seniors start to face reality with no more dreams or tomorrows, accepting the present, wondering what to do and what the future holds. Now that acceptance letters have been mailed and reviewed by students, they begin to discover what destiny holds for them for the years to come.

Many of us wept and many of us jumped with glee about the news we have been awaiting so anxiously for many months, and for many of us, even years. Maybe we didn’t get accepted to the school we always dreamed about attending, but we shouldn’t think any less of ourselves.

Many times a student’s GPA or SAT scores don’t truly decide whether a student has the potential to become successful in the future. I believe that the main characteristic a person needs in order to be successful in life is ambition and believing in her or himself.

Even if you didn’t get accepted to the U.C. campus you were so eager in getting into, don’t give up. California is one of the few states that offer a wide range of educational opportunities after high school. California alone has 99 community colleges. Not only are they cheaper, but, they’re also a great way to transfer and get general education out of the way where, compared to a UC or state university, you would be paying thousands more a year.

But there are also many of us who have no clue what to do after high school. Either we have the choice to work and start making a living with only a high school diploma, earning minimum wage, or we decide to try out Gavilan for a couple of months because sometimes staying at home with nothing to do makes us bored over time. Anyway, our parents are paying for everything, so why do we have to worry? Right?

It’s very frightening to think about life independently, having to pay for your own education, books, transportation, food and maybe even rent. Everything changes so drastically that we often get confused and mixed up with what’s happening, which can sometimes lead us to forget what we should be focusing on: the present. Like grades for instance, which will finalize our certainty of graduating this year.

But not all of us were rejected from our choice of college. Many of us worked very hard through out our high school years, which benefited us by all of the years of sacrifice and continuous headaches from studying all night and day.

But sometimes our parents don’t feel It’s time to let us go just yet. It must be very difficult for a mother and father to part from their beloved children, especially when It’s the first time that their child is away from home. Many times these parents don’t even let their child go to sleepovers or spend a night anywhere else but their own home. This can be a very difficult obstacle which may interfere with a student’s decision on whether to go to the college they worked so hard to attend for so many years.

High school to me is something that I’m excited is finally over. Many people say that your teenage years are the most unforgettable years of your lifetime and that you should enjoy every day of them. But I say they’re the most terrible years that will take our whole adulthoods to overcome.

What I can’t wait for is the future that awaits us. Becoming what we have always dreamed about being when we were five years old: firemen, doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, professional soccer players, artists, business men or even the next Einstein.

Those, I bet, are the most remarkable years in life, when you’re actually done with school, beginning your career, meeting that perfect someone and are doing what you love most, enjoying life at the fullest, knowing you accomplished all of your goals in life. Being happy.
