The Sobrato varsity football team is still celebrating a first in school history: the first varsity football win with a 35-14 victory over Harker High School.

“This was one big step,” running back Eric Woodruff said Friday. “This is history. This is the very first win from a varsity team at the school. It all came from nothing but hard work.”

By the first half, the Bulldogs had all the points they needed with 27, but the team was not satisfied.

One second half touchdown and strong defense kept the Eagles from putting together a comeback, though they scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

In two quarters of play, the Bulldogs recorded three more touchdowns than they had in the previous two games combined. Two coming by way of Eagle fumbles.

“We did exactly what we had practiced all week,” said head coach Jeff Patterson. “They had a blast. It was all them tonight. I only called the plays – they executed them.”

Before Harker could respond, the Sobrato led 27-0. But the first half shutout was foiled with less than 30 second to play in the half when freshman quarterback Arman Gupta ran for five yards and the score.

But it was still Sobrato’s night.

Woodruff started the Bulldog scoring push on a three-yard run to cap off a 36-yard drive following an Eagle fumble.

Woodruff led the Bulldog charge with three touchdowns, including a 49-yard sprint with 2:05 to play in the half.

Quarterback Matt Kellett recorded his first touchdown reception when he connected with Woodruff for a nine-yard completion with 1:22 to play in the first quarter. Kellett ran one in himself when he barreled 23-yards for the final Sobrato touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter.

“This was lots of fun,” Kellet said. “We had a really good practice all week. We just got to keep practicing hard.”

Rounding out the scoring was Steven Gutierrez who had the second longest scoring run of the night behind Woodruff when he drove 35 yards for the quick six with 7:23 to play in the first half.

Gutierrez’s run was the first play following an Eagle fumble recovered by Nathan Fiala deep in Harker’s own territory.

The Eagle’s best drive of the night came late in the fourth quarter when they drove 70 yards in 10 plays ending with a four-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion.
