After a week off with no practice, the Sobrato softball team used Tuesday’s nonleague game against Pinewood as a way to shakeoff some rust.
Despite stranding seven runners in scoring position—including five over the last three innings—the Bulldogs easily defeated Pinewood 5-2.
Coach Fred Cisneroz still was able to empty his bench and give all three of his pitchers some time in the circle.
“It’s nice to have a pitching staff like that,” Cisneroz said. “Sam (Torres) the senior and the two sophomores coming up and they all ahve different speeds they bring.”
Sobrato pitchers struckout a combined nine hitters and surrendering just three hits.
Sam Torres earned the win, going three innings, giving up an earned run on two hits with no walks and five strike outs.
She gave way to Kasey Suess who went three innings as well and didn’t allow a hit.
Suess surrendered an unearned run in the fourth inning on a passed ball, but nothing else.
Pinewood threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases on a walk, an error and a hit batter, but Suess popped up the next two hitters to get out of the inning.
Megan Perron earned the save, throwing the seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Perron also had the hot bat of the day, going 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
She got things rolling in the first when she doubled home Jaden Ta from second. Ta had reached on a bunt single and stole second.
Perron also scored in the third inning when she reached on a one out single and stole second.
The throw went into the outfield where the centerfielder booted the ball, allowing Perron to go to third.
She then scored on a wild pitch  to give Sobrato a 3-1 lead.
Torres then walked and Morgan Martinelli was hit by a pitch setting up Kayla Rooney who singled into right field to score Torres from second.
But the throw to the plate went to the back stop, allowing Martinelli to score on the error.
Pinewood had actually taken an early 1-0 lead when Torres surrendered a leadoff single that turned into a run thanks to a safety squeez.
After tying the game in the bottom of the first, Sobrato took the lead in the second when Kat Castronovo reached on an error at third base.
With Julie Camacho pinch running, Sobrato scored on an RBI ground out by Madi Mestez.
Camacho had stolen second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Sobrato didn’t score after the third inning, despite putting two on in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the sixth, Sobrato had runners on second and third with one out and loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn’t score.
Sobrato will next travel to Silver Creek Thursday for a 4 p.m. game.
