Sobrato’s Michael Guio’s momentum rounding second base causes

Young Sobrato team falls to Gilroy in TCAL action, 2-1; Bulldogs
steadily improving
Gilroy – When the Sobrato baseball team needed something to cut into Gilroy’s 2-0 seventh-inning lead Wednesday, Taylor O’Connell was at the plate, doing what he does best.

The junior catcher, who is hitting close to .500 on the season, hit a two-out, two-strike RBI single to left field Wednesday, driving home Danny Nelson (single) from third. The clutch hit cut the Mustangs’ lead to 2-1.

“Right there, I knew there were two strikes. So I was just thinking fastball and I adjusted to the curve,” said O’Connell, who transferred from Live Oak to Sobrato this year. “I got a good piece of the bat on the ball.”

The rip was a part of O’Connell’s 2-for-3 day. The junior accounted for two of Sobrato’s four hits.

But in the end, the late run wouldn’t be enough and the Mustangs held off the Bulldogs for the 2-1 Tri-County Athletic League win.

Gilroy improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in TCAL. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-8-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league, but have been steadily improving since losing three of their first five games by double digits.

Last Thursday, Sobrato dropped a narrow 6-5 game to powerhouse Palma.

“We’ve been playing well the past three games. We’ve been getting some good defense,” said Sobrato head coach Shorty Gutierrez. “I think we could surprise some people next time around.”

Nelson and Michael Guio each had one hit apiece for the Bulldogs. Starting pitcher Tim Buich (1 K, 6 hits) took the loss.

Sobrato’s next game is Tuesday at home against Salinas at 3:30pm.
