Dear Editor,

I just finished dropping my first grader off at Barrett Elementary School, appalled by the total disregard of parents for not only the safety of their own children, but for others as well.

I see young children not in car seats, or even seat-belted in; parents making u-turns in the middle of the street just to nab a convenient parking space; kids with (even some without) their parents jaywalking – often darting in between cars; people “rolling through” the STOP signs; parents driving too fast…it’s TERRIBLE! It is only a matter of time before a tragedy is going to occur! When I came home to read your article in the Morgan Hill Times, I was glad to see something like this Operation Safe Schools program being implemented, but I see the location of Barrett Elementary not mentioned as a target area.

I hope the police department will include this location in their program. In the very least, I would appreciate having someone from the police department monitor the area during the morning drop-off hour (7:30 – 8:30am) and/or the pick-up time (1:45 – 2:15pm) to witness this situation for themselves. It truly is sad and appalling to see the total lack of consideration for the safety of these children…

Regards from a VERY concerned parent and citizen.
