In Friday night’s 41-0 blowout of North Salinas at the Salinas Sports Complex, the Gilroy High defense absolutely dominated for its second shutout of the season.

“We set a goal before the season for two goose eggs,” GIlroy High defensive coordinator Greg Garcia said. “We came close against Watsonville and almost had it against North County. .They came through tonight. That’s the first thing I congratulated them on afterward.”

The Mustangs beat Gunn 35-0 earlier this season.

Gilroy’s offense didn’t do too badly, either. Junior Justin Sweeney opened the game with a 76-yard breeze to the end zone, and rushed for 115 yards on just nine carries. And, senior quarterback Peter Mickartz threw three TD passes for Gilroy (2-1 in TCAL, 7-1 overall).

Hollister-SB 27, Salinas 21

Hollister-San Benito scored the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds to pull out a hard-fought victory over an inspired Salinas team on Friday night.

After the Haybalers got the ball back with just seconds left in a 21-all contest, quarterback Karson Klauer hit receiver Alex Gonzales for 39 yards to the Cowboy 2.

Two plays later, Klauer drove into the end zone for the winning score to keep the Balers (3-0 in TCAL, 6-1-1 overall) in first place in league.
