Dear Editor,
As a graduate of Live Oak who attended a prom at Club Del Monte, it is a shock to me that the parents of high school seniors at Live Oak expect the school to take responsibility for the actions of their children after the prom. If these parents are going to allow their teenage children the freedom to roam the halls of a Monterey hotel following their prom, then these same parents should also be the ones who are responsible for the behavior that ensues.
The ASB office should not have to baby-sit high school seniors after they’ve already put in all the work to make the prom a success. If a parent is concerned about what their child is doing after the prom, the parent needs to take the initiative to provide a better alternative to the hotel party in Monterey.
Furthermore, while the recent fall at the hotel caused severe injuries, we should be thankful that given the number of years Live Oak students have been partaking in this after-prom debacle (by my count, it began with the class of 1997 or 1998) there have not been significantly more injuries or, god-forbid, fatalities because of this reckless behavior.
