Fernandez finishes third at Napa Valley Girls Classic; Teammates
have good showing at Jim Root Classic
Morgan Hill – The Live Oak wrestling team’s only girl wrestler, sophomore Moriah Fernandez placed third at the Napa Valley Girls Classic on Saturday.

Fernandez once again faced the No. 1 girl ranked in the nation Lauren Knight of Vallejo and fell in the semifinals. Fernandez captured third place going 5-1 on the day.

On Monday when the new rankings for the girls was released, Moriah found herself secured in the No.3 spot in the state.

While Moriah tangled with some of the best girl wrestlers in the state, a few of her teammates were participating in the Jim Root Classic at West Valley College.

“We only sent five wrestlers (to the Jim Root). All battled very hard and had some good wins,” said Live Oak coach Robert Fernandez.

Jason Hendersen won the consolation bracket “A” with a 4-1 record, as did Larry Dominguez who also won his consolation bracket “A” with a 4-1 record

Buck Tanner had a some very tough matches, according to Fernandez, but wrestled strong finishing with 1-2 record on the day. Steve Dominguez also battled in a tough bracket and finished the day with a 2-2 record.

Brett Jones earned a fifth place finish with a 4-1 record.

The Acorns return to the mat on Tuesday when the face perennial wrestling powerhouse, the Gilroy Mustangs in Gilroy.
