Robert Davies, a San Mateo police officer who was arrested at his Morgan Hill home June 6, is scheduled to appear in court July 8 for an arraignment on accusations that he contacted a minor for criminal, sexual purposes, according to authorities.
Davies, 40, was arrested after San Jose Police investigated him for chatting about engaging in sexual activity with a social media user who posed as a 16-year-old girl, according to the San Jose Police Department.
He is currently out of custody on bail, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney O’Bryan Kenney. Davies will be arraigned July 8 at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. Kenney said the specific charge or charges against Davies will be announced at the July 8 proceeding.
The social media tipster, identified by police only as a “concerned citizen,” had created a fake account on the Tinder dating app as a 19-year-old female, according to police. Shortly after Davies started chatting with the user in May, they switched to another mobile messaging app where the citizen told Davies she was a 16-year-old girl.
Davies allegedly acknowledged the account holder’s age and continued to chat with her about a potential sexual encounter, according to police. The tipster learned Davies was a San Mateo police officer, and alerted the authorities about his communications.
The SJPD Covert Response Unit arrested Davies June 6 at his Morgan Hill home after serving search warrants on his mobile devices and his residence, police said. He is charged with contacting a minor to commit a felony.
According to Davies’ Linkedin profile, he has been an officer with the San Mateo Police Department since 2015. He has also worked for the Burlingame and Redwood City police departments. Davies served in the US Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007.
