With the success of the Live Oak varsity basketball team this year, some of the other teams have been over shadowed.
The Live Oak boys soccer team is also off to a good start with a 6-1-4. The team has a strong group of forwards. Coach Tony Goble said he would like to have seen his team finish a few more games rather than tying. The Acorns will face some tough competition in the league, but should have a good shot at the title.
The girls soccer team has played only five games and is 1-3-1.
Coach Tony Vasquez said he is a little concerned about the lack of games. It is quality not quantity.
“We did all right,” Vasquez said. “We still have a lot of things we need to work on. We played hard. We just need to put the ball in the back of net. If we do that, it will relieve a lot of pressure. We just need someone to step up.”
Vasquez said he will move up an extra player to have three forwards instead of two on offense.
Live Oak will compete in the Los Lomas tournament against some of the best teams from the north section.
“I wanted to play against some of the harder teams,” Vasquez said. “All the teams we’ve played so far have made the CCS playoffs. It is good for us.”
Live Oak plays today at 8:30 a.m. against Bishop Odowd at Maramonte High School, against Foothill at 1 p.m. at Foothill High and then Saturday at 10 a.m. against Bonita Vista at Maramonte.
This weekend’s tournament in which Live Oak is guaranteed four games should help get the Acorns ready for its first league game on Jan. 9 against visiting Hollister.
“They’re bringing back a lot of girls from last year,” Vasquez said. “They play a lot teams, but no one that is really hard. it builds confidence for them, but for us confidence will come when we play league. I want to prepare the girls for CCS.”
The Live Oak girls basketball team had a tough time in the Sweet 16 tournament in Seaside despite giving North County a good run before losing 49-44. The rest of the teams in the Tri-County Athletic League all have a winning record. Live Oak will have a tough league schedule. The team doesn’t have any natural shooters, which will hurt. Although Live Oak does have good size and a good post presence.
The Live Oak wrestling team finished 25th out of 64 teams in its first tournament of the year in Pleasant Hill.
“We didn’t have anyone who placed,” said coach Brian Allen. “It’s a rebuilding year. We have a couple of kids have the possibility of making to CCS – Chris Horner, Dan Benevento, Mike Gamez, Matt Hendersen, Matt Melert.”
The grapplers will go at it this weekend in the Atascadero tournament starting today at noon and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
