Girls 16U
Flash take two
The De Anza Flash won two games in as many days with a victory over the Speed Saturday and against the Surge on Sunday.
In Saturday’s game, De Anza took on the Scott’s Valley Speed and won 4-0.
Brittany Barnes could do no wrong and notched a hat-trick. Kelly Logan completed the scoring by hitting a Nicole Hovey cross from 15 yards out to the lower left corner.
On Sunday, the Flash played their nemesis, the South San Jose Surge. These games are always close and this one was a melee.
Cayla Derry opened the scoring in the first five minutes on a set play. Trish Dunwoodie took the freekick from 35 yards near the right touch line. While the Surge held the Flash at the top of their penalty box, Dunwoodie hit an out swinger into the far side of the box. Derry slipped behind the defense and smacked a shot to the far post. The half ended 1-0.
Another set play from almost the same spot as the first at less than five minutes into the second half, this time for the Surge. The pass came into the box and was headed just inside the near post, 1-1.
Three minutes later, from a corner kick, Sarah Whitling passed to Logan who scored. The Surge responded with a blast from eight yards after a wonderful buildup from the left side tieing the score at 2-2.
With 15 minutes left, Kendra Sato hit a ball into the box. A Surge defender hit the ball with her hand and Maurya Campeau scored on the penalty kick, making the score 3-2.
During the entire game, goalie Melanie Regan owned her penalty box. The Surge could not exploit their high cross attack because Regan caught every pass well above everyone’s head.
Outside backs Bub Seifert and Shelly Pund denied any serious attacks from the wings and Katie Ramos played very aggressively from the stopper position. Alison Wan, who has been injured for the last four games, did a great job clarifying rotations and keeping the coach in his seat.
The Flash play the Los Gatos Magic at 9 a.m. next Sunday and finish their season on Nov. 15 against Mountain View.
Boys 13U
Pumas 4, Stormtroopers 2
The Pumas continued their unbeaten run on Saturday against the Almaden team winning the hard fought game 4-2.
The first goal came from a cross by Adam on the right, which was headed past the scrambling defense by Anthony Velazquez. The score at half-time was kept to 1-0 by strong play in midfield by Rivera and Thrappas. Strong at the back was Wang, Cambra, and Guenther with Stuart also returning to form.
In the second half the Pumas controlled most of the game and goals came from Schafer, Moya, and a second goal from Velazquez completed the Pumas four goals.
The Stormtroopers scored two goals by taking advantage of lapses in concentration in the Puma’s defense. The Pumas are now 9-0-0 going into their last game of the season and look set to clinch their division.
Girls 11U
Fury 2, Breakers 2
The Fury played an extremely competitive game against one the league’s top team, the Breakers as they battled to a 2-2 tie.
The Fury opened the scoring when Aubrey Young weaved past several Breakers making a well placed pass to Lauren Schmidt who booted the ball to the far left corner of the net.
The Breakers came back with two goals in the first half. They would have had more except for the great goalie play turned in by Allison Troini. On one play, she reached high and barely got a couple finger tips on a Breaker shot. The ball was deflected and sailed above the top rail for a miss. Allison had over 10 saves for the Fury.
The Fury defensive line of Mariette Lowe, Emily Mandel and Anna Moyneux frustrated the Breakers offense all day long. The defense was anchored by the strong sweeper play of Jennifer Prostman. Fury midfielders, Veronica Lane, Nicole Cheim, Maggie Paveza, Allysa Drake, Mika Matsumoto and Melanie Menage kept the Breakers at bay. Alex Maldonado made several key passes on the front line.
The Fury tied the scored in the opening minutes of the second half, when Schmidt made a powerful boot that ricocheted off a Breaker. The ball bounced to Lauren Hunsacker, who made the most of it by striking the ball high, out of the reach of the Breaker goalie to the uppermost left corner.
Girls 10U
Lightning 4, Force 3
Lightning electrified crowd as they came from behind to win 4-3 against the De Anza Force.
Down 3-0, the Lightning recharged for a ferocious second half. Henry Cullen and Marshal Deogracia were the dynamos that sparked the resurgence. Matt Abrahamson, Andrew Whitling, and Dominic Changco added to the attack with sharp passing and quick play.
Cam Weirshauser, Trevor Fuhriman, and Scottie Henningsen showed signs of defensive greatness that weakened the Force. David Guenther’s lightning speed created many opportunities that led to victory. Miles Mammen played impressively. Dalton Vanden Brandhorninge continued his sharp play in goal as he fended off a barrage of De Anza shots to hold them scoreless in the second half.
Girls 8U
Dolphins 2, All Stars 0
Alisha Martinez and Hayley Kline had starring roles for the Dolphins in their defeat of the All Stars on Saturday.
Their speed and determination as forwards created ideal situations for their teammates to score. Tamlin Vereyken and Sabrina Rousselot took advantage of the ball placement and scored the Dolphins two goals.
Erin Schirle and her teammates Alyssa Feskanin and Madison Bohn were impenetrable as goalies throughout the match.
