No Rules 1, Pumas 2
With a win against Pacifica’s No Rules the Pumas maintained first place in their division.
The small field did not suit the Pumas style of play, but the two goals in the first half was all that the Pumas needed to clinch the game in Pacifica.
A strong left footed goal scored by Robert Adam, playing left forward, opened the scoring. Then just before half-time Anthony Velazquez scored from a 20 yard free-kick over the defensive wall and out of the reach of the Pacifica keeper.
In the second half the Pumas, who were playing with three key players missing and no subs, were flat.
The Pacifica team fought hard and pressured the Pumas eventually scoring their only goal. But Pacifica almost scored twice more. One shot was sent over the bar from 10 yards. The second was saved brilliantly by stand-in goalie Bruce Ocana. The shot was hit hard 12 yards out on the left and looked sure to beat the keeper. But Ocana rose to the occasion and parried the ball high and wide for the save.
Pumas have now moved clear of De Anza who lost their first game October 11.
Pumas remain unbeaten for the season.
The Pumas record two shut outs to extend their unbeaten streak.
After a sluggish first-half with no score the Pumas opened the scoring when Phillip Thrappas kicked a soft bouncing shot from outside the 18 yard box. The ball went over the goalies head and hands and into the net.
The next goal was a tremendous shot also from the edge of the penalty area. The ball was passed back to Schaffer who drove the ball high and hard into the top of the net.
Goals three and four were the result of well shot goals and strong running from Velazquez and Adam.
Strong offensive pressure and sheer grit and determination from Valdez forced three MVLA defenders into disarray, Valdez broke free and scored with a strong right footed shot.
The Pumas had four other chances in the first half but they were unable to finish.
The MVLA team were stopped repeatedly by the Pumas defense of Guenther, Wang, and Cambra playing flawlessly at the back.
Strong in central midfield, both offensively and defensively, were Thrappas and Ocana. Ocana played particularly well with strong tackling, and passing. Halftime score was 0-1.
The second half brought an onslaught as the Pumas settled into their game. A strong run by Adam down the right side-line and a long cross to the back post was headed brilliantly home by Hoskins. Minutes later a long corner was volleyed low and hard into the net by Schaffer. With 15 minutes to go Adam ran through the defense again, his shot hit the post and Hoskins was there again to slot the ball home. In the last 10 minutes, the ball bounced to Adam 10 yards out, hit the ball firmly with is left into the corner of the goal.
Hoskins almost scored a hat-trick but his close range shot was parried over the bar by the goalkeeper. Adam scored one goal and had three assists as the Pumas move to 8-0-0 for the year with two games left in the season.
Eagles 2, Breakers 1
Although they have been playing well all season, it finally came together this past Sunday as they beat the Santa Cruz Breakers 2-1 in a strong team effort where the entire team played well.
The Breakers scored first, but the Eagles came back to tie the game on an unassisted goal by Orlando Villa in the first half. The Eagles then went ahead in the second half when Garrett Wheeler scored the winning goal with an assist from Villa.
The OMI Eagles, who lost four class I players last season, have been struggling all season to regroup and rebuild, but they are getting stronger each game.
Goalie Matt Morgan had an outstanding defensive game, allowing only one goal which found the far left upper corner.
Jordan Bredehoeft, Chris Dasgrupa and Jorse Enquirez all had strong games on defense. Anchoring the midfield were Sean Little, Nick Slavemini, J.P. Sanchez, Pedro Ulloa and Wheeler.
Relentless attackers included Roupen Arzoumanian, Pablo Figueroa, Dylan Frechette and Adam Johnson.
Next weekend the Eagles head to Danville for the Headless Horseman Tournament.

Oscar Gutierrez completed the first half scoring by taking advantage of a loose ball in front of the Earthquakes net. David Hovaessian provided solid first half defense in support of goalie Jason Struzik.
The second half was more of the same as Oscar Gutierrez scored his second goal with a hard shot off the Earthquakes goalie. Throughout the game, the United defense executed clearing passes to send the forwards off for another scoring chance. The United defense was finally rewarded when back-liner Jackson Gion converted on a 25 yard shot over the Earthquakes defenders. Ben Trioni and Mitch Pasek played aggressive defense and kept the Earthquakes scoreless until a late goal spoiled the United shutout. Evan Schirle and Ty Gardner also played important roles in the United victory.
