Blitz 2, Blue Lightning 1

The Blitz opened with a strong attack, dominating play during the early minutes, developing several good scoring chances. A near miss on a scoring chance was followed in short order by a direct free kick, which was executed perfectly with a high, hard shot soaring over the wall and into the Lightning goal untouched for 1-0 Blitz lead.

Shocked by the early goal, the Lightning regrouped and began to counter attack but without initial success. After 19 minutes, however, an excellent free kick from outside the box was directed into the Blitz goal by Gaby Gamez tying the score.

Five minutes into the second half, a hand ball in the box presented the Blitz with a penalty shot, but the kick went wide. However, eight minutes later, a Blitz forward broke through and hit a shot the Lightning keeper deflected but could not save.

Tornadoes 1, Cyberrays 0

The Orchard Valley Tornadoes took on the Cyberrays in a rescheduled game Saturday winning 1-0.

The Tornadoes started the game strong, putting constant pressure on the Rays. The Tornadoes scored early in the first half when Taylor Johnson fed Amanda Kline a pass to the right wing, and Kline banged the shot into the corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

It looked like the Tornadoes might put the game away early, as midfielders Amanda Whitling, JC Clayton, Bella Comin, Lexi MacPhail, Mary Thatcher and Alex Seda controlled play throughout the first half, keeping the ball in the Tornadoes’ offensive end for the bulk of the time. However, they were unable to score, and it remained 1-0 at the half.

The Tornadoes kept up the offensive pressure in the second half, but were still unable to put anything more in the net. Their defense, although weakened by the absence of Stephanie Wan, kept the Cyberrays at bay. Defenders Cloey LemMon, Lindsay Pund and Sarah Block, along with the rest of the Tornadoes, put on another fine defensive display. Clarissa Hammer saved a potential goal early in the second half when she ran down a Cyberray on a breakaway.

Goalie Nichole Downing made two excellent saves (one on a nearly uncontested shot) and handled several other chances flawlessly to preserve the shutout. The Cyberrrays had one last chance when they were awarded a penalty kick from about 25 yards out with only seconds to play. But JC Clayton blocked the kick, and the Tornadoes held on for the shutout victory.

With the win, the Tornadoes pushed their record to a league leading 4-0. They have a key matchup next Sunday as they travel to play the West Valley Divas, who are currently second in the league.
