Storm 2, Peppers 2

The Orchard Valley Storm traveled to Sunnyvale on Saturday to challenge the Sunnyvale Roadrunners. The Storm pressured the Roadrunners throughout the first half. Hailey Hamilton had two shots on goal

that went just wide of the net. The Storm finally broke through when Amber Thomas made a nice pass up the right side to Jada Williams. Williams then cut back inside and blasted a shot into the far corner of

the goal for a 1-0 half-time lead.

The Storm took control of the game in the second half when Taylor Slattery, who played a great all around game, scored from her right midfield position. Sydney Barker and Megan Nebesnick both had great

shots that were denied by the Roadrunner keeper. Colby Carson then scored a pair goals to ice the game for the Storm.

The excitement for this game had been building for weeks. Both teams came into the game undefeated and tied for first place. The sideline was overflowing with fans cheering for both teams. The Chillipeppers controlled the game in the early going and scored mid-way through the first half to take a 1-0 lead. The Storm responded when Taylor Slattery burst down the right side and fired a hard shot towards the left post. The Chillipepper keeper deflected the ball, but Colby Carson crashed the net and punched in the tying goal.

The Peppers took a 2-1 lead in the late stages of the second half. The Storm charged right back on the offensive. The Peppers attempted a long clear from their end that Amber Thomas stepped in front of and headed to Taylor Slattery. Slattery pushed the ball up to Kaylana Mau, who crossed it to Janessa Garcia for the dramatic tying goal.

Due to injuries, the Storm was forced to play to key game short-handed. Several Storm players had to play the entire game. Rebekah Inouye, Sydney Barker and Tula Urban were spectacular in the midfield and on the back line.

Tornadoes 0, Crush 0

The Orchard Valley Tornadoes and Los Gatos Crush were unable to create any serious scoring opportunities, battling to a 0-0 tie.

The Tornadoes are in a bit of a slump, as they have been unable to score in either of their last two games. The tie has knocked them out of first place in the league for the first time this season.

The Tornadoes midfield, JC Clayton, Alex Seda, Mary Thatcher, and Amanda Whitling, controlled play for the most part throughout the game, mounting several good offensive pushes for forwards Bella Comin, Clarissa Hammer, Taylor Johnson, Amanda Kline, and Lexi MacPhail. None of the Tornadoes’ strikers, however, were able to find the back of the net.

An excellent Crush goalie handled every shot the Tornadoes could muster. At the other end of the field, the Tornadoes’ defenders, Sarah Block, Cloey LemMon, Lindsay Pund, and Stephanie Wan played a solid game, keeping goalie Nichole Downing from having to weather any serious scoring chances.

The Tornadoes hope to get back on track with a Jamboree on the off date next week.

Others

No Fears 0, Raptors 3

In their first year of competition, good defensive play, teamwork and great passing by the No Fears team kept the score to 3-0 against the Raptors.

Nick Weldon and Cameron Helvey as goalies braved many shots by the Raptors to keep the score down. Weldon had more than six saves in the first half, and Helvey had more than three saves. Matthew Hopwood assisted Helvey on a terrific save in the last half.

The defensive line kept pace with many great moves by the Raptors’ Nathanael Wrye and Stephen Hunter. Ruben Martinez continued with several consistent strong kick-ins to keep the ball in play for the offense.

The offensive line in the second half had great drives toward the goal by Joseph Saavedra, Sven Truijen and Weldon. Jeff Perry, Marco Ramirez and Hopwood continued with consistent play and fancy legwork moving the ball around the field. Cole Hyland had a marvelous drive to the goal only to be clipped by the Raptor’s defense. Stephen Hunter was hustling the entire game.

Phoenix 1, Jaws 0

Although they have been very competitive in previous games, Saturday was the first win for the Phoenix as they shut out the Santa Cruz Jaws 1-0.

Goalie Brook Silvetti anchored the defense while striker Erica Turnlund led the offense with the winning goal.

Stopper Porsha Lowe, along with defenders Alexandra Mandel, Jamie McAllister and Amanda Wong, protected the goal while midfielders Marina Cathers, Alyson Inouye and Jessica Rinauro directed distribution.

Attacking on offense were Stephanie Armstrong, Sarah Bernardini, Erica DiPietro, Zoe Fiorio, Monique Garrett, Shayna Osuna, Kristin Wallash and Kim Westbrook.

The Phoenix is one of two brand new girls class III teams in Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League this year. This group of 17 former class IV players have only been together since mid-June and have been working very hard to improve their skills and adjust to the pace of competition soccer.

Flash 7, Surf 0

In spite of a knee injury, scholastic assessment testing and homecoming float management that reduced their roster from 13 to 10 for the Saturday contest, the De Anza Flash beat the Santa Cruz Surf 7-0.

Cayla Derry started things off with a goal about one minute into the game and added another in the second half. Brittany Barnes followed with a breakaway goal. Kendra Sato scored from long range over the goalie’s leap. Maurya Campeau pounded a header into the net on a corner. Kelly Logan hit one in the left corner in the first half and then added a free kick before the Surf could set their wall to end the game with a goal.

The Flash took maximum advantage of the space created by their missing player and made the ball do their work. Smooth passing from backs Trish Dunwoodie and Bub Seifert to midfielders and then target player Nicole Hovey kept the Surf off-balance.

Katie Ramos attacked from her stopper position and goalie Ani-Mel Regan (recovering from a week-long illness) grabbed every ball, giving the Surf no chance to score.
