The Live Oak volleyball team went 3-1 in the Menlo Atherton volleyball tournament last weekend.
“Overall, we had a really good tournament,” said coach Laura Coleman. “We served well. I don’t’ think we missed any serves during the whole tournament. Our hitting was OK – nothing horrible and nothing awesome.”
Live Oak recorded two-game wins against each of the teams in the pool: Burlingame, Evergreen and Soquel.
Going into the finals round Live Oak was seeded first in the pool but fourth overall. Live Oak (14-8, 2-0 TCAL) was defeated in two games by Castilleja after a two-hour wait.
“Our passing in the last game was too tight to the net,” Coleman said. “Other than that, most of our passing was pretty descent. When you can keep the long rallies going, that is when you pick up the momentum.”
Kristen Russ led the Acorns with her serves, and Kristina Giacalone continued her strong defensive play.
Live Oak, which has one more tournament to go, will play the tall, quick Salinas team.
“We will have to raise the net,” Coleman said when asked about containing them. “We will have to dig their hits. We have to play our game but just a little bit better. We saw them in a tournament, but we didn’t have a real set lineup, now we are down to two lineups that we use.”
Girls Polo
The Live Oak girls water polo team is no longer undefeated after playing some of the top Central Coast Section teams in the Amanda McDonald Tournament.
Live Oak (14-3, 4-0 TCAL) finished sixth in the tournament of 16 teams.
“Yes it was our first loss, yet I am extremely excited about where this team can go,” said Live Oak coach Bryan Traverso. “To take sixth out of sixteen teams is an awesome accomplishment in such a competitive field. Like I told the girls at the end of the tournament, we are a few adjustments here and there from doing quite well when the CCS playoffs start.”
The Acorns opened against Saint Ignatius on Friday and won 8-4. Breanna Sennert had four goals. Chelsea Lanning and Ronni Gautschi each had two goals, and goalie Danielle Maldonado made nine saves.
Live Oak lost the second game against Menlo 13-2. Lanning scored the two goals during the game. Maldonado had five saves.
In the third game, Live Oak lost to Mitty 12-4. Lanning scored three and Gautschi had one goal. Maldonado again had five saves.
Live Oak defeated Aragon 8-6 in the fourth game behind seven goals from Lanning. Gautschi scored the other one. Maldonado came up big with nine saves.
In the fifth place game, Live Oak lost to Menlo-Atherton 7-4, Lanning scored two goals, and Jessica Kapetanic and Gautschi each scored one. Maldonado had 10 saves.
In league action last Thursday, Live Oak defeated Notre Dame 16-6 in Salinas.
“Our passing was very sloppy, but this was due mainly to the fact that we were playing in the small pool,” Traverso said. “However, our defense was spectacular, and by the end of the game we were better able to adjust to the pool.”
Lanning led the way with eight goals. Gautschi, Kapetanic and Amanda Cretcher each added a pair, and Ashley Vater had one. Maldonado had four saves.
