The Live Oak Girls Cross Country team fell to Salinas on Monday 23-32 despite another great performance from Cobbie Jones.
Jones kept the Acorns somewhat close throughout the afternoon by winning the meet with a time of 19:38.
Her first place time was a minute ahead of the second place finisher, according to Head Coach Dean Raymond.
“She pretty much cruised.” he said. “She’s still recovering from minor things, so it was a good training run for her.
Raymond said Jones had some minor injuries and little dings and knicks, but nothing too serious – at least not this year.
“Last year at this time she was dealing with a stress fracture,” he said, “so we’re trying to not work her too hard but still push her to where she can continue to improve and be competitive with some of the top runners in CCS.”
Raymond also liked what he saw from sophomore Yesenia Miranda, who finished fourth (21:32).
“It’s her first year running cross country,” he said. “I’m really pleased with the effort she put out.”
The Salinas Cowboys had no problem handling the boys team Monday, winning easily by a score of 18-43.
Raymond said that even though the margin was wide, he wasn’t too disappointed with what took place in Monday’s meet.
“We were going against the school that went to the state meet last year,” he said. “So even though they handled us pretty well, I was pleased with a couple of the boys.”
Raymond said he thought Billy Wong (16:45) – who finished third – Jonathan Kamei, 10th (18:22), and Brent Hatakeyama, 11th (18:29), all put forth a good effort.
Monday’s meet dropped both of Live Oak’s cross country teams to 1-4 in league, ahead of only Gilroy.
Live Oak’s next meet will be at the Monterey Bay Invitaional on Friday and Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas.
The Acorns meet against North Salinas – originally scheduled for Monday – has been changed to Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
