The Gavilan College women’s basketball team won the consolation championship of the Hartnell College Tournament over the weekend with Sunday’s 75-30 victory over Monterey Peninsula College.
The Lady Rams were ahead 41-10 at the half and were never threatened with Sabrina Murphy netting a team-high 21 points and teammate Jenn Tremblay, an All-Tournament team pick, adding 20.
“We’re very proud of the way our team is playing now. We’ve had a strong defensive effort these past two games and on offense our passing has led to taking good shots,” first-year head coach Mike Girardi said. “Our players are doing well with under-standing the importance of teamwork.”
The Lady Rams defeated Cabrillo College by a 50-32 spread in Saturday’s second round of the Hartnell Tournament. Gavilan led 28-11 at halftime. Murphy, of Hollister, led Gavilan in scoring with 17 points and had seven steals, while freshman Cynthia Pinto scored 14 and added seven assists. In addition, sophomore captain Nicole Donley, of Hollister, scored 12 points, including two three-pointers. Tremblay, of Hollister, controlled the boards with 13 rebounds.
Gavilan lost to Ohlone College in Saturday’s opening game of the tournament, 69-41. Sabrina Morales led Gavilan with nine points and Nicole Donley added eight. Ohlone is 7-0 and ranked No. 19 in the state.
Up next, the Lady Rams (3-3 overall) are at San Jose Christian College on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m.
