Did you know that every two weeks, the Santa Clara County Library’s bookmobile comes to Morgan Hill?
Originally designed for rural library service, the bookmobile is a library-on-wheels, providing personalized and comprehensive library service to people who may have difficulty visiting the Morgan Hill Library or other community libraries. It carries a range of items including books for children, teens and adults – bestsellers, large type books, magazines, talking books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s. Spanish- and Russian-language materials are also available.
The Santa Clara County Library bookmobile provides service to seniors, the disabled, pre-schools, migrant camps and geographically remote locations such as Mount Hamilton and the Santa Cruz mountains. The service has grown in popularity and the county library has recently purchased a new, state-of-the-art bookmobile which will hit the road early next year.
The bookmobile recently won an award for its services to families at the migrant camps and other low-income locations during the summer. The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library joined with other Friends’ groups in the county to financially support this program.
The bookmobile makes two kinds of stops in the South Valley: public stops where anyone may come on board, and also deliveries to institutions (when full public stops are not practical or feasible). Currently the bookmobile visits two local pre-schools, Woodland Estates mobile home park and two locations in San Martin on alternate Mondays. Suggestions for new stops and deliveries are always welcome.
In addition to the bookmobile, the Santa Clara County Library offers free delivery of library services to the homebound. A wide variety of library materials, including books, videos, music, talking books, and large print materials may be selected. The first step in applying for homebound services is to contact the Morgan Hill Library reference desk at (408) 779-3196. Our staff will prepare a profile of the type of library materials of interest to the individual customer. The materials may be delivered or in some cases mailed. It is also helpful if a friend or neighbor can pick up the selections.
The bookmobile and homebound service work together to make sure excellent library services are available to everyone in the community.
Questions and suggested topics for At the Library, which appears in Tuesday editions, should be directed to Nancy Howe, community librarian, at nh***@**********************ca.us or by calling 779-3196.
