Dear Editor,

As a concerned parent and dedicated volunteer of the Morgan Hill Unified School District, I am writing with extreme disappointment at the tragedy of losing Britton Middle School’s ASB Leadership Program, which has been in place for the past 30 years.

As a volunteer, I have witnessed pride, respect, honor, and integrity in the kids of the ASB Program since 2000. Along with the Home and School Club, the ASB has helped fund the Renaissance Fair for the seventh graders, the Victorian Tea for the eighth graders, honor roll assemblies, the Britton booth at The Mushroom Mardis Gras, sporting events, dances, club field trips, fund raisers, and more.  Having the students actively involved in the planning and execution of these activities is part of a well-rounded education.

I can personally tell you that the ASB Leadership Program at Britton has been nothing but exceptional. I know there are many kids besides mine who have benefited from this program. I have seen several come through the program with a brighter outlook on school and a great deal more self-confidence. I thought these qualities would be those that the school district would strive to achieve, but I don’t see it being accomplished if such a vital tool such as ASB Leadership is eliminated. I hope the removal of the program will be reconsidered – it is such a necessity…a beneficial one…these are our future leaders…if we don’t teach them how to lead, where will we be?
