A busy high school graduation weekend was accident-free in Morgan Hill, though a DUI checkpoint Saturday night snared one driver.
Morgan Hill Police Officers manned a checkpoint at East Dunne Avenue and Joleen Way between 8:30pm and 1am. MHPD Chief Bruce Cumming said 637 vehicles went through the checkpoint, and officers stopped and talked to 127 motorists.
Jery Steinberg, 52, was cited and released for driving under the influence. The following day, Cumming said, Steinberg was arrested for being drunk in public. Police didn’t know where Steinberg lived by press time.
One other DUI over the graduation weekend was not related to the graduation or the checkpoint: Joel Gomez, 27, of Morgan Hill, was cited and released.
CHP Public Information Officer Chris Armstrong said there were “a few minor crashes” in the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area over the weekend, but no major injuries.
“And no teenagers getting hurt as a result of too much graduation celebration,” Armstrong said. “That makes it a very good weekend.”
There were no major disturbances or other problems related to the graduation celebrations over the weekend, Cumming said.
“Every year, I cross my fingers that kids will be safe, because it only takes one to make a stupid mistake,” Cumming said. “I am very glad that we’ve made it through another graduation season, this time with no major problems and no kids injured or arrested.”
At Live Oak’s graduation Friday night, Cumming said, there were two incidents that police responded to. A man attending the graduation reported another male threatened him and stole a chain that he was wearing. Cumming said officers have identified a suspect.
In the other incident, Cumming said a 5-year-old girl was missing from the graduation for a 45-minute period. Officers searched the area. Apparently there was a miscommunication between the girl’s mother and grandparents, Cumming said; the grandparents had taken the girl home.
