The Sobrato junior launched 11 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault title at Santa Teresa Division Finals on Thursday at Branham High School. He helped the Sobrato boys (7-0) place third as a team and score enough points to clinch the league championship

The Sobrato Bulldogs produced only two individual titles at the Santa Teresa Division Boys Track and Field Finals, but their third-place finish, coupled with the points they received for their 7-0 record in dual meets, cemented them as outright league champions for the first time in program history.

The Bulldogs did just enough Thursday at Branham High School. They entered the qualifier for Blossom Valley Athletic League Finals with 14 points, four for each dual-meet win, and received six more for scoring the third highest behind Piedmont Hills (123) and Branham (99).

Sobrato edged the runner-up school by two points in the overall standings, clinching a second team league title in three years.

The Bulldogs crowned two individual champions in William Puna (discus) and Miguel Redmond (pole vault) and advanced nine athletes to the BVAL Finals, set for May 10 at Mount Pleasant High School, the final steppingstone before sectionals. Puna, the school-record holder in discus, threw 132 feet, 10 inches, while Redmond launched 11-6. Puna also took fifth in shot put (38-4 1/2), earning a final spot for BVALs.

Sobrato athletes took second in eight events, including Ryan Corvese (1,600 and 3,200 meters), Thomas Yath (400), Zach Ankiel (800) and the 1,600 relay of A.J. King, Jacob Luis-Ramirez, Yath and Ankiel. Yath also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Cody Hulme finished third in the 3,200, and Brad Cachopo placed fourth in discus and shot put.

The Bulldogs caught a tough break in the opening 400-meter relay, as Drew Glines, Yath, King and Redmond were disqualified.

The Sobrato girls had a solid meet, highlighted by Rebekah Inouye’s high jump victory at 4-10. The Bulldogs took sixth (59) as a team but sent 11 athletes through to BVALs.

Sophomore Jessica Reid qualified in four events and clocked the ninth-best 400-meter time (58.72) in the section while placing third behind Piedmont Hills’ Ellisa Bryant (55.20) and Timarya Baynard (55.70), who held the fastest and second-fastest marks, respectively. Reid was fourth at 200 meters and took second in the 4×100 with Kate van Keulen, Shawna Lai and Cybil Pace; and in the 4×400 with Andie Koldewyn, Jackie Yago and van Keulen. Reid anchored both relays.

Koldewyn placed fourth in triple jump, and Yago fifth in the 100.

Also for Sobrato, Amanda Bogden took second in pole vault; Maritza Anaya was third in discus, Elizabeth Tran placed fourth in high jump, and Alyssa Aryanpour finished fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Evergreen Valley scored 123 points to win the girls meet.
