Morgan Hill Unified School District is looking for input.

Through a survey now available online in both English and Spanish versions, the district is surveying families and the community to better assess what type of alternative schools it should look into.

Previously discussed by the board of trustees at the Jan. 31 school board meeting and in a special board study session in April 2011, options put on the table include magnet schools, charter schools, a K-8 model or a sister school concept. Currently the district will start a dual-immersion Spanish-English program for the 2012-13 school year, although it is currently unknown if it will be a school within a school or its own separate option.

The magnet school model discussed at the Jan. 31 meeting would give a certain focus to a school such as dual-language or a technology-engineering. Socorro Shiels,  assistant superintendent of educational services said at the time to keep in mind the possible fiscal challenges with such a school in terms of special equipment and supplies.

A K-8 school model would eliminate the elementary to middle school change, although to take under consideration would be facility changes. A sister school would include a K-3 school and a 4-6 grade focus, yet each at different sites.

Superintendent Wes Smith has said that these options are not mutually exclusive and could be combined.

The 20-question survey will take approximately 20 minutes and can also be conducted in person (in Spanish or English) at the district office, located on 15600 Concord Circle. The online links were first made available today and the survey will run until March 16.

Results will be presented to the school board in April to “to determine next steps in creating schools that best serve our community,” reads the survey.
