They needed overtime, but the Live Oak Acorns beat struggling James Lick 49-46 on Thursday at Live Oak High School to become eligible for the postseason for the first time since 2006, the final year of coach Brett Paolucci’s previous stop at LOHS.

Luke Laguna had 19 points and made five 3-pointers, and Austin Carvalho scored 13 points for the Acorns, who battled back from a 15-6 deficit after the first quarter.

The Acorns outscored Lick 8-5 in the extra period for their third win in four games.

Jakob Conlan added nine points, including a 7-for-8 effort from the free-throw line, and Eddie Plascencia scored eight for Live Oak (10-11, 7-4).

The Comets (3-18, 2-9) received 12 points from Clinton Okoro and 11 from Ron-Michael Relogo.

Live Oak, now 2-0 in its four-game homestand, hosts first-place Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

  • Sobrato battled close with Leigh for the second time this season only to fall 49-34 on Tuesday in Mount Hamilton Division play.

The visiting Bulldogs were undone by a cold second quarter.

Sobrato (3-18, 1-10) had 13 points from Travis Saenz and nine from Ben Vater.

Thursday the Bulldogs got 10 points from Saenz and seven from Vater in a 73-27 loss at Piedmont Hills.

Girls basketball

Two nights after nearly knocking off first-place Willow Glen, Live Oak fell 45-33 on Thursday at James Lick in a West Valley Division game that was close until the fourth quarter.

Kristi Kisso-Martinez, who had nine points in the 35-33 loss to Willow Glen, scored nine again Thursday, and Jocelyn Mendoza added eight the Acorns (6-14, 3-8).

Mendoza went for 10 points against the Rams, and Danielle Horning had nine.

  • Alyssa Firato (14 points), Jessica Westall (10) and Lindsey Ellenburg (one) scored all of Sobrato’s points in a 45-25 loss to visiting Gunderson on Tuesday in Santa Teresa Division play.

Boys soccer

Ben Hartl and Alexis Diaz connected for a goal, and Live Oak snapped a four-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over winless Independence on Tuesday at LOHS.

Diaz scored in the first half for the Acorns (6-5-4, 3-5-2), who lost 4-0 to Prospect on Thursday.

Wrestling

Sobrato fell 45-24 to defending Santa Teresa Division champion Leigh on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs received wins by fall from Bryan Gomes (120 pounds), Thomas Burback (138), Zach Zhang (152) and Brandon Lefore (160).
