School district officials and board of education trustees were on hand May 13 as the latest in pre-fabricated modular classrooms were installed at San Martin Gwinn Environmental Science Academy.
Two Gen7 CHPS PreFAB modular classroom buildings were designed to accommodate increased enrollment in San Martin/Gwinn’s Dual-Immersion Multicultural Education program, which has been extended to include middle school as well as K-6 students. The Gen7 buildings were constructed in the AMS factory in Manteca and will open to students in August.
SM/G, an environmental science focus academy, will house seventh and eighth grade students beginning in 2016-17 school year. The school board approved the district-backed initiative to add two grade levels to the K-6 primary school, making it a K-8 school site option for local families.
According to school officials, SM/G is the first site to be registered as a project with the Collaborative for High Performance School 2016 CHPS PreFAB Criteria and Program due to the environmental quality, energy efficiency, materials and waste management of the state-of-the-art classrooms.
“Gen7 PreFABs make is easy and affordable for schools to achieve their sustainability goals, while helping students learn and thrive in a healthier, more environmentally responsible environment,” said Casino Fajardo, Director of Construction for MHUSD.
Launched in February, the Gen7 PreFAB is the nation’s first, and only, prefabricated classroom to be pre-verified by CHPS.
“We’re excited to have Morgan Hill as the pilot project for the CHPS PreFAB program,” said Tony Sarich, VP of Operations for AMS and Gen7 Schools.
