Hot weather

A hot spell cranking up as the week progresses combined with smoke in the air from a more than 10,000-acre wildfire burning in Monterey County has made for unhealthy air quality in South County, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Drew Peterson.
Today’s high is forecast at 88 degrees with a 10-degree jump to 98 from Tuesday through Thursday before a weekend cooldown. Friday’s high is 92 degrees while Saturday and Sunday will drop to highs of 85. The overnight lows throughout this week are forecast at 57 degrees.
Peterson said to expect smoggy conditions for at least the next few days as firefighters fight the fire that continues to rage in Big Sur with northeastern winds blowing the smoke into South County.
“The fire is still growing pretty rapidly and that’s going to kick up more and more smoke so the air quality is going to get worse and worse,” said Peterson, noting that those most affected are the elderly, young and asthmatic.
