MORGAN HILL — Johann Christ Abordo continued his unbeaten streak, and the Live Oak badminton team resumed its winning trend Thursday with a convincing 10-5 victory over rival Gilroy in Live Oak Gym.
Abordo, the Acorns’ captain, moved to 6-0 on the season with a three-set victory over Hien Nguyen, 15-10, 11-15, 15-0, in the No. 1 boys singles match. Owen Frederick, Alvin To, Emily Mandel and Alexandria Muniz also won for Live Oak, which moved to 3-2 in West Valley Division play.
Gilroy (3-2) sacked four of the nine doubles matches, but Live Oak countered with wins by Kristen Pitsenbarger and Sayuri Ramirez; Sara Ann Garber and Brittanie Lloyd; Addien Wray and Peter Mains; Miguel Mahany and Jaehoon Kim; and Shahrooz Bastamy and Naromy Ramirez. Garber, who moved to doubles play because of injury, continues to impress.
For Live Oak, the win followed a 10-5 loss Tuesday to Willow Glen, a strong team with a deep roster. The Acorns were at a disadvantage again, having to forfeit a doubles match because of insufficient players.
Abordo and To collected their team’s only singles wins, with Abordo beating Bobby Dinh 15-5, 15-6, and To outlasting Thur Nguyen 14-17, 15-9, 15-2.
Live Oak managed three doubles victories, as Garber and Lloyd won 15-4, 15-13; Wray and Mains triumphed 15-10, 15-12; and Mahany and Kim rolled 5-15, 15-9, 15-6.
