Morgan Hill Skate Park users may soon find themselves paying $1 per day to use the facility, according to a city staff report.

The Morgan Hill City Council will consider the charge Wednesday night as a measure to pay for staffing there. Since the $600,000 park opened June 27, Centennial Recreation Center staff have grappled with users who disobey the rules. The most overlooked rule is the one requiring safety equipment. Skaters have also been known to skate across the parking lot and on recreation center grounds, and some have been smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages inside and outside the skate park.

Recreation Director Steve Rymer estimates that staffing the park for 2,500 hours annually would cost $16,000, and the $1 per day user fee would recoup 65 percent of the cost.

The city has also asked the Association of Bay Area Governments to allocate an unused portion, or all of, the city’s leftover 2008/09 Risk Management Grant, which totals $20,000, from the Association of Bay Area Governments to pay for the additional staffing costs.

The city council will discuss these changes during their 7 p.m. meeting Wednesday night at City Hall, 17555 Peak Ave.
