I jog along Butterfield Boulevard near Digital Drive and the
last tree has raised the cement and I tripped
“I jog along Butterfield Boulevard near Digital Drive and the last tree has raised the cement and I tripped. And, across the street there’s a nice tile walkway that separates homes from a field and there’s a raised tile where I tripped and did a faceplant. I’m 72 and don’t always pick up my feet at the end of my run. Can you help? Thanks.”

Dear Tripped, Red Phone contacted Deputy Director of Public Works Mori Struve, who thanked you for bringing the matter to his attention.

“A work order has been created and repairs will be made by (Friday July 24) where the public sidewalk has been raised by the tree,” he said. You also mentioned that across the street there was a tile walkway which also needed repair. The property manager could not find the exact location, so Red Phone connected the caller with the appropriate person to further describe the need for repair. So good caller, things should be a lot smoother out there for your jog.

Downtown ‘shrooms under repair/

“Dear Red Phone, I often walk through the downtown and have been noticing that over time some of the decorative mushrooms in the downtown have fallen into disrepair. The two that I have noticed in the worst of shape are the ones located outside Magpie and the one outside Rosy’s at the Beach. The one outside Magpie long ago got its paws ripped off and now half off its nose is gone and the other half is barely on. The one outside Rosy’s at the Beach has also had its solar panel ripped off many times. Who is responsible for maintaining the mushrooms and do they have any plans to perform any upkeep?”

Dear Who is Responsible, Red Phone contacted Jorge Briones, the executive director of the Morgan Hill Downtown Association. He said his office works with each artist when repairs are needed.

“‘Mushzoom,’ which is located by Rosy’s at the Beach, has had a repeat issue with the adhesive used to affix the solar panel that feeds the headlights,” he said. “After a period of time that adhesive stopped working and the panel had fallen off, however this seems to be holding up well now. ‘Gloria,’ located in front of Magpie is undergoing similar challenges. In both instances the artist’s have been contacted and are working to or have worked to make needed repairs as quickly as possible. One other mushroom, ‘Poppies,’ was removed due to a flaw in the clear coating which caused the paint to bubble and peel from the mushroom. That mushroom is currently back with the artist and should be back on display shortly.”

Thankfully, Briones added, there have been zero known incidents of vandalism to the mushrooms.

“With the exception of the stray child whose parents may think that it is OK to climb on the mushrooms they are holding up as expected. By the way, it is not OK to climb on the mushrooms. Overall, visitors to downtown seem to be enjoying and respecting Mushroom Art which will remain on display through the spring of 2010.”

And, more mushrooms are on the way and people can soon download a walking map that shows the locations of all the mushrooms from www.morganhilldowntown.org

No plans to open Holiday Lakes ramp

“Hey Red Phone, are there any plans for the old Holiday Lakes boat ramp/parking lot? It’s just sitting there.”

Dear Boater, Red Phone contacted Tamara Shear, Santa Clara County Parks Department supervisor, who said this question comes up quite often.

“There are no plans in bringing back the marina that was once located near Holiday Lake Estates,” she said. “It was removed by the Santa Clara Valley Water District many years ago. At that time there was discussion of trying to resurrect the boat ramp/parking lot but the homeowners did not want the public to have access to the boat ramp.”

So there you have it good caller. Seems to Red Phone a serviceable boat launch ramp is sitting there unused while there are often lines of boats waiting to get off Anderson most weekends. See you on the lake.
